Soap Skin & Bubble Plugin
Sketchup is a great tool for modeling all sorts of shapes and objects. One of its biggest drawbacks is that it has a hard time modeling organic shapes with NURB attributes but luckily it doesn’t have to stay that way any longer thanks to the Soap Skin & Bubble plugin.
Josef Leibinger’s Soap Skin & Bubble plugin for Sketchup is one of the most exciting things to happen to Sketchup in quite some time. The free plugin gives modelers the ability to easily create a multi-faceted face inside of a closed group of three or more lines. Its as simple as selecting the lines, start up the plugin, tell it how many faces you want the new face to have, and then sit back to watch it work its magic. The plugin also lets you inflate or deflate the new face after its been created.
As a word of warning, if you use a very large number of polygons to create your curved face, the plugin may crash your model depending on your machine. It’s rare but if you keep the polygon count low you shouldn’t have any problems. Overall, its a stable plugin that is a blast to use on more organic shaped models. be sure to follow the steps on his download page to install the Soap Skin & Bubble plugin properly.
UPDATE: Soap Skin & Bubble Plugin can now be downloaded directly from Sketchup’s Extension Warehouse or installed via Sketchup’s Extension Manager plugin.

Creating Organic Skin in SketchUp with Soap Skin and Bubble
Sometimes, it’s really nice to have the ability to create a face in SketchUp between lines that aren’t on a single plane. However, this can be a little difficult unless you have this plugin.
Plugin Name: Soap Skin and Bubble
Plugin Developer: Josef L
How Much does it cost? Free!
Where do you get it?
You can get it by searching for Soap Skin and Bubble in the SketchUp extension warehouse.
This extension can take 3 or more lines, as long as they’re joined together, and create a face between them.
You can adjust the size of the grid the extension creates, allowing for fine control over how detailed the face you create is.
You can adjust the X/Y ratio of the faces it creates to customize how smooth your faces are.
In addition, you can use the inflate function to adjust the way the face between the lines is made. For example, if you increase the inflation factor with this extension, it pushes the faces out, almost like you were inflating a balloon.
All in all, this is a great tool for creating surfaces between lines that aren’t necessarily co-planar.
This tool is designed to help you create faces between different lines, and it’s very good at it. It has an interesting solution to the problem of creating organic faces – by creating a “bubble” and allowing you to adjust the pressure inside the bubble, it gives you great control over the faces that are created.
This is a free plugin. The author lists it as a limited time demo in the extension warehouse, but so far, every time the time limit on it runs it, he just extends the time limit.
Ease of Use/Documentation – 3/5
I had to go looking for instructions on how this extension works. There’s a little information on the author’s website, but overall, I’d suggest going on YouTube and watching a couple of the videos on there to learn how to use this extension.
Overall score – 13/15.
This is a great skinning extension. You’re not going to need it on every single model you do, but on models you create where you need to add complex skin between lines, it’s a must have. Couple that with the free price point, and there’s absolutely no reason you shouldn’t go download this extension and give it a try today!
That’s where we’re going to wrap up this plugin overview.
As you know, The SketchUp essentials is a side project for me, and a lot of these tools and extensions cost money. By supporting me on Patreon, you help me be able to purchase licenses for new softwares to keep bringing you new plugin reviews and other SketchUp content. Even a dollar a month helps.
In either case, thanks very much for watching, and I’ll catch you in the next video.

Replicating the behaviour of SketchUp’s plugin «Soap Skin Bubble» in Blender
I wish to use Blender to replicate the way one of SketchUp plugins work, as closely as possible.
I exactly mean the part described in 1:22-1:48 of this video:
He creates a complex outline, then fills it with mesh and «inflates» the mesh. The topology doesn’t have to be in quads, nor it has to be very regular. I don’t care much about topology, just about the silhouette. Is this possible to do in Blender?
I first took a look at some tutorials covering balloon cloth simulation, but it won’t work because the boundary edges must not be moved in my case. They have to stay in place. This is crucial.
I appreciate any suggestions.

Cloth simulation can work very nicely as a modelling tool in Blender.
Some differences from the Sketchup add-on you refer to:
- Blender Cloth is more general, so there are more settings. They can be saved as presets, though, once you’ve got them sorted out.
- The Sketchup add-on assumes the boundary of the shape is pinned. In Blender, you have to pin vertices explicitly. Create a ‘Pin’ vertex group, allocate it with weight 1, and declare it pinned in the ‘Shape’ panel of the Cloth settings. (Name the group whatever you like)
- Blender Cloth Pressure (one of the ‘Physical Properties’ panels)requires a a closed manifold mesh, otherwise it ‘leaks’ So, as you see, your shape has been extruded downwards, and the bottom face filled. The rim and base can be discarded after applying the Cloth modifier.
- I also added a ‘Tension’ vertex group to control the shape of inflation.. to give the inflated shape a thinner waist:
Unlike the add-on, the Blender simulation runs as an animation. This one stabilized in about 20 frames.
